Tomax
downhole regulator (AST) in the Far East Asia region

Far East operators have many wells to drill in a variety of fields. These wells are key to meet increasing demand for oil and gas, also locally. The need for reliable economics in a variety of challenging developments puts pressure on a predictable cost base.

Tomax AST is recently proven as a vital component for improving drilling efficiency and reducing trips for failures world-wide. Tomax represents the same good fit with the ambitions for cost efficiency and reliability in the FAE region.

Tomax’s Anti Stick-Slip Technology (AST) has changed performance drilling by counteracting self-excitation and vibration below the neutral- or zero tension point in the string.

This part of the string is practically disconnected from surface and out of reach in terms of control. An effective regulator in this section of the string has consequently made a big difference for stabilizing the bit-rock interface leading to less dysfunctions and extended footage

With 20 years of field experience and a total of 13,500 successful wells, Tomax AST is proven capable of predicting efficiency improvement and reduced downtime in diversified oil and gas fields. Also the FEA region where the technology is deployed on a continuous basis and was recently used for the drilling of the longest well in Malaysia.

KEY CHALLENGES IN FEA

Challenge: Persistent issues with torsional vibrations and stick-slip in many complex carbonate formations

How Tomax solves the challenge: The AST regulates the bit/rock interface in a way that prevents friction induced chatter in carbonates. This drops the risk and allows faster ROP from increasing WOB

Challenge:Need for new, more cost-effective solutions to have systematic reductions in drilling cost in field-life extension applications and combinations with longer wells

How Tomax solves the challenge: The AST is proven to reduce none-productive time and improve cost efficiency from as many as three different sources: Increasing ROP, saving bit-trips and reducing tool failures

SPE PAPERS

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is the difference between AST and a shock dampener?

Dampeners will absorb and subtract energy from the bit. The AST will store and add back the energy. This provides the bit with a higher and more steady force.

Has the AST been verified by 3rd party and science?

Yes, both operators and independent research institutes have conducted several comparisons and studies. All is published through SPE and other channels.

Can AST work alongside SoftTorque and similar systems?

AST complements SoftTorque by stabilizing the rock-cutter interface. This critical bottom part, below the neutral point is out of reach for SoftTorque and advanced surface controls.

How does AST contribute to sustainability in Far East Asia?

The documented ability to provide systematic improvement in operational efficiency presents a perfect alignment with FEA sustainability goals.

Are there needs for tuning or adjusting the AST?

The AST downhole regulator has an operational range that eliminates the need for field-specific tuning or adjustments, making AST a bolt-on improvement.

How does the AST deal with HFTO vibrations?

The AST limits bursts of torsional energy that otherwise is known to energize the high frequency torsional oscillations or HFTO.
